Summer is here even though it hasn't felt like it with cooler temperatures we have been having. Low humidity and a lot of mornings starting off in the 50's lately. Never met anyone that really likes real hot weather so this has been very comfortable. It has kept water temps lower than normal which is great for the trout fishing. Only thing that hasn't been great is it has been dry around here. Thankfully this week we have received some much needed rain. Depending on which area of the state your in we received around 4 inches over 5 days. Hopefully this will keep river flows up and at good levels for awhile. The low and clear water has made topwater fishing for smallmouth bass productive because they notice the surface disturbance since its so clear. Still haven't seen a bunch of insects yet, a few damsels, and dragonflies but no sign of Summer cicadas yet or dobsonflies. Hair frog patterns have been productive and topwater baitfish patterns in moving water has done well. Soon will be switching over to more of my Summer bugs and poppers. Getting close to my favorite time for smallmouth bass, next few months offers topwater bite usually all day everyday!
Finished up with my last trout trips early this month. I'll jump back on trout once we get passed the heat of the Summer and cooler temps arrive in late September typically. The recent rain I'm sure have gotten the trout in a good mood at the moment. Now would be a good time while flows are up to hit the mountain streams before they get low again, of course that'll depend on rain. Hope we continue to get a decent amount this Summer.
Good luck out there and hope to see you on the water!
