Winter Musky

First day of Winter wasn’t too bad.  Started out with rain but that ended late morning and air temps reached 60 degrees.  It surely hasn’t felt like Fall or Winter, Christmas Day forecast is 70 degrees believe it or not.  The mild weather has been nice but tons of rain has fallen since early October.

With my son out of school for the Holiday season I didn’t think I would get out much this week.  Luckily my son was invited to to make some cookies with grandma, so I had the chance for a quick trip to the river.  Quick text to a friend and away we went.  River was high, but clarity was ok and the first hour on the water didn’t show much life.  I was up to bat for the second hour and realized this was the first time I had actually gotten to fish myself out of my new jet boat.  I had used the jet boat many times but I was always guiding.

I put on my favorite musky fly and started covering the water and it wasn’t long before I felt my line get tight on the retrieve.  I wasn’t actually paying attention and looking around at the sights.  Felt great to catch a musky on a quick trip and not spend all day looking for the hungry ones.  Every now and then its easy, but never quite as often as I would like.

I hope everyone has a very Merry Christmas!
