Well its been business as usual for me except for less trips than normal in April. I appreciate everyone that has kept me on the water during these hard times. Fishing has been good with even better weather until the other day. Thats right, we got the dreaded deluge Sunday and Monday. I think around 3-4″ of rain. Pretty typical for April, its rarely dry or predictable. I have had high and low conditions on the Jackson river. Late March provided good streamer fishing conditions and early April provided great flows for the caddis hatch. Had a good week tossing dry flies, swinging wet flies, and drowning nymphs with clients. Currently the Jackson River is 3500 cfs from the rain, hope to see better flows by the weekend.
The annual striped bass run has begun on the Staunton/Roanoke River. These fish are coming out of Buggs Island Lake and running up river to their spawning grounds near Brookneal, VA. We have been primarily catching male stripers from 18-25 inches, the females will show up in the next week or so. I can do fly or spin fishing trips on this fishery. Its a great time to get out and tangle with my favorite fish in Spring.
I did have a few cancellations during my two week period at Weldon, NC on the Roanoke river. These fish run out of Albemarle Sound in North Carolina. The biggest difference between the Staunton run and this one is numbers. Weldon will have thousands and thousands of striped bass to be caught and their for the same reason to spawn. I currently run 5 hour trips at Weldon for $400. These are mornings and afternoon trips. These are my current openings for the Weldon run. May 5th morning and afternoon, May 6th morning, and May 11th morning.
Hope you all are staying safe and enjoying the outdoors!
