Smallmouth bass fishing has really turned on this past week on the James River.  Warmer water temps and tons of insects have the fish on the banks looking for their next meal.  Caught several fish this week with beetles and other types of insects in their mouth.  Not that you need to throw small flies for them, anything buggy looking will work.  Generally I use flies ranging from size 1 to 2/0 so their not matching the hatch in anyway and thats the great thing about smallies.  If their hungry its like your favorite vacuum they’ll suck it up.  Past six trips clients put three 20″ bass in the net and several 19″ bass plus countless 18″ bass.  It has been great fishing lately.  There is still plenty of time to get your big bass on a surface flies.  Fish feed well on top till late September.  July has filled up but still plenty of open dates in August and September.
