Well Punxsutawney Phil wasn’t joking when he didn’t see his shadow.  The past two weeks has felt like March not April.  Fished in the snow two days last week.  It finally seems like Spring has finally sprung and plans to stick around this time.  Temps in the 70’s and 80’s the past few days.

The colder temps hasn’t slowed down the trout fishing though.  We have had great trips with well above average fish on nymphs on the Jackson River.  Streamer fishing has been good as well.  I have teamed up with Fort Lewis Lodge on the Cowpasture River offering learn to fly fish weekends.  We just completed the first two with 18 anglers in total attending and staying the weekend at the lodge.  No more are scheduled at this point for this year but likely more for Spring 2019.  Check out the lodge’s website www.fortlewislodge.com.  With the warm temps the past few days the caddis have really started hatching strong on the Jackson and area rivers.  So don’t forget your dry flies!

Starting tomorrow Lord willing, I will be targeting more striped bass than trout over the next three weeks.  Striped bass run on the Staunton River should be going strong very soon.

Another first musky was landed last week by my nephew Landon.  I took my brother-n-law and nephew out for a quick trip to the James River for pre spawn smallmouth bass.  Turned out the muskies were the hungry ones.  We had two muskies eat smallmouth bass lures.  My brother-n-laws musky found his 10lb line with its teeth but Landon got lucky when his jerk bait connected outside of the jaw.  Awesome to see this 14 year old catch his first musky even if he wasn’t trying.
