I survived a ten day stretch of guided trips in 90 degree plus weather. The heat was wearing me down but every time one of my anglers stuck a 18-20 inch smallmouth bass on the surface I was rejuvenated. The past ten days has been great though. Plenty of fish eating on the surface and as long as you stayed hydrated you were fine. With the bright sun and heat we rarely caught a bass that wasn’t in the shade of the bank. Four fish 20 inches or better were landed this past week with numerous fish in the 17-19 inch range. Average fish has been 13 inches fishing topwater flies on the James River this summer. With two months left to throw surface flies I’m sure we will get on so more James River citation smallmouth bass.
