Spring is finally here even though it has felt like January the past two weeks.  A couple snowstorms and cold temps have kept the water temps cold.  Today reached 74 degrees so I’m hoping the temps below 50 are done.  Looking forward to green grass, leaves, and flowers from here on out.

Trout fishing has been great this month and even though its been colder than normal it hasn’t slowed them down.  March has always been one of my favorite months to fish for trout because the browntrout are coming out of their Winter funk.  Skinny and cold their ready to pounce on streamers and nymphs.  March has always provided great streamer fishing for me if conditions are good.  Higher flows, even a little off color water can make a great streamer day.  If water is low and the sun is shining not so much.  April and May will also be great trout months.  With insect hatches starting to happen more often and in abundance.

There is a lot of fishing to look forward to now.  Very soon the striped bass will make their annual run from Buggs Island Lake up the Staunton River to spawn.  Also the Roanoke River in Weldon, NC will start to see the mass of stripers coming up as well.  May being the best month in my opinion for Weldon’s striper run.  Once I’m done with April and May, smallmouth bass will be on the brain.  Always look forward to the long Summer days and smallmouth bass eating flies from the surface.  Now isn’t a high number type of fishing for smallmouth bass but it is a great time to catch a big pre spawn bass.  I got out a week ago to scout a float and found some healthy bass.

I have very few April dates but May I still have availability for trout or striped bass.  The stripers are only this far inland once a year so don’t miss the opportunity to hang into these hard pulling fish this Spring.
