Unfortunately its that time of year to start thinking about something other than bass.  My smallmouth bass trips are winding up and Fall so far feels like July.  It cooled off the first of the month but we had several days in the high 80’s lately.  Still catching some great fish on topwater flies but expect in the next week will have to make the switch to streamers until it gets cold and bass flee to deep water.  It has been a great Summer though, to many trophy smallmouth to count and tons of personal best fish landed by clients.  It wasn’t the easiest of seasons though with low water.  The past couple weeks the smallmouth bass have been very spooky.  I have seen plenty run for cover when they see the line flinging in the air.  I’m going to keep fishing and guiding for smallmouth bass on the fly or spin until the water cools to much which is typically mid October. Starting next month the focus will be trout and musky till Spring.  Just hope some rain happens to visit Virginia soon, we need it.
