Went from guiding for trout on the Jackson river this weekend back to my favorite thing to do in the summer, smallmouth bass fishing with poppers. Its been a busy week and we have had some good rain over the weekend. Water levels have risen but its been much needed rain. Some rivers got a little to high and off color for good fishing but the James river did not. Fished with Bob and his group of four anglers on the upper James yesterday. Everyone put good numbers of fish in the boat even in rising water. The highlight was Bob’s 19.5″ bass on a popper. Todays trip with a different Bob and his grandson started off slow but the afternoon turned on for us and we put a good number of 14 to 16 inch bass in the net on topwater flies. Next weeks weather is looking good, its actually going to feel like summer again with temps in the high 80’s.
