Well its here, I wasn’t quite ready for it but Fall has arrived. Our weather the past month has definitely felt like Fall. The cool nights and days have brought the water temps down to the low 60’s or lower. The topwater bite for smallmouth bass is basically over and the past couple days we were able to raise a few fish but not enough to stick with the good ole popper. The Staunton river produced a lot of bites today throwing white baitfish fly patterns. The smallies were very aggressive traveling distance to swipe at the fly wether you moved it slow or fast. We even got the attention of a couple southern pike. I’m not sure how many more days I will be chasing smallmouth bass this year so if today was my last it ended well. Clients and friends put a lot of big fish in the boat this summer and I’m already looking forward to next June! Its that time of year to move on to musky and trout. October is already looking great for both and I start next week with trips for both. There will likely be a smallmouth bass mixed in for a couple more weeks.
