Its been a steamy summer so far. Feels like most days have reached 90 degrees lately but that hasn’t slowed down the bite on the James River. Big smallmouth bass have been out cruising the banks or hanging in the shade during the afternoon heat. I’m starting to see more and more fish in the 18 to 20 inch range near the banks. Little to no refusals either throwing topwater flies. Most fish are coming right over with no hesitation to try out the floating bug. Summer topwater fishing is going off now and will continue to the end of September.
