The topwater bite is going strong and will continue till late September. If you have that topwater fishing itch now is the time to scratch. The past trips on the James and Staunton Rivers have given up personal best bass each trip. I’m starting to see more big bass shallow along the banks looking for that easy meal floating by. This time of year is referred to as bug fishing for most hardcore smallmouth bass fly fisherman. The annual cicadas will start to die off over the coming weeks and the fish are looking for a splat on the water. So fish your buggy poppers and sliders. The summer has flown by and I’m going to keep pounding the banks for every smallmouth I can find until the cold weather gets here. Trout and musky trips will be starting up in October but I still haven’t gotten enough of the small jaws to think about them yet.
