Drifting near the back yesterday morning with my client as he was throwing poppers trying to entice a bass. I caught a glimpse of something down river looking up at us. Quickly realized it was a black bear swimming across the mighty James river. I told my client we would row down so we could get closer for a photo of the bear. I started rowing hard towards the direction of the bear but the bear steadily drifted downstream as it swam. I finally caught up to it near the bank and got a few photos before he put his paws to the ground and left the river quickly. This was the first bear in Virginia I have seen swim the river and the first time my client has seen it as well. You never know what you may see fishing in God’s Country.
