Does anyone remember when we had normal weather?  The past five years seems to be storm after storm in the Spring.  Its really messing me up!  I’m always excited for April because the striped bass start making their way up river to spawn.  The problem is the rain is all or nothing it seems and a calendar booked with striper trips fades away with the rising water.  There is light at the end of the tunnel.  Trout fishing is also great in April and generally is my backup plan when the Heavens open up.  Trout fishing is what I have done the most of this month.  Jackson River flows have been up which provides the streamer fisherman with the conditions we want.  Made it one day for some pre spawn smallmouth action.  Bite was slow due to the cold water temps but still managed more than a handful of nice smallmouth bass on the fly.  March was a lot warmer it seemed like than this April, the smallmouth bass fishing was better then with more stable conditions and not so much fluctuations with air temps and river flows.

Now that April is coming to a close I migrate south, not far only about 3 hours.  The striped bass run at Weldon, NC is calling my name.  I did go down there a couple weeks ago after getting blown out here.  The bite was good and the flows steady.  Hopefully the river doesn’t rise a whole a lot while I’m there.  But if it does there is always fish to catch, just have to change locations or tactics.  I’m really looking forward to the next two weeks.  Its usually the best striped bass fishing you will see the next two weeks.  I have a full calendar and ready to get after it!

After I return from the striped bass run I will begin smallmouth bass trips.  I will have few trout trips mixed in but once June arrives Its smallmouth season!
